“Invisible No More: Military Rape and Public Policy in Real Time.”
University of California Riverside School of Public Policy, Riverside, CA. Open to the public.
Click here for write-up in UCR Today.
Following decades of denial, secrecy, retaliation and “no tolerance” pledges, military rape is at last becoming recognized as a human rights issue demanding sweeping public policy bipartisan reforms. Ignited by the 2013 Academy Award-nominated documentary “The Invisible War,” a relentless trans-media campaign has forged a powerful coalition of advocates, survivors, policymakers and retired military leaders that continues to generate historic levels of awareness, support and public policy action in real time.
This presentation features Brigadier General (Ret.) Loree Sutton, MD and Laurie Leitch, PhD (Co-Directors, Threshold GlobalWorks) both of whom have been actively involved in this national movement calling for specific reforms concerning military rape and sexual assault as well as broader issues concerning military culture and national security. The session will include a 30-minute film excerpt from “The Invisible War”, followed by presenters’ remarks and interactive discussion focused on the emerging role of ‘policy entrepreneurship’ as illustrated by this documentary film and its unwitting role in pioneering a public policy campaign for human rights and social justice. All public policy students and faculty are encouraged to attend. Email Mark Manalang: Mark.Ma@UCR.edu to register.
